Almost certainly. A car that has outlived its usefulness for you could be someone else's lifeline to employment, school, or medical care. We accept vehicles in any condition. If it can be certified for a family, it will be. If it cannot, it is sold for parts and the proceeds fund repairs for other vehicles. Either way, your donation moves someone forward.
Yes. You must be the registered owner.
Yes. We accept non-running vehicles. If your vehicle cannot be driven, contact us and we will work out whatever is most convenient for you - including tow truck pickup from your location where conditions allow.
Vehicle donation: The most impactful way to give. Email info@effectivecare.ca to arrange a drop-off at our partner shop. Bring your vehicle registration, a valid BC photo ID, and the keys. We handle the ICBC ownership transfer on site. If your vehicle cannot be driven, we can arrange a tow truck pickup from your location (conditions apply).

Parts donation: Spare auto parts, tires, and mechanical components go directly toward repairing vehicles for recipient families. Contact us to arrange a drop-off at our partner shop.
Your vehicle registration in your name, a valid BC photo ID, and the keys. We handle the ICBC ownership transfer paperwork on site - you do not need to visit an ICBC location separately.
Remove your licence plates before drop-off and return them to an ICBC location, or cancel your Autoplan policy first. Whatever is most convenient for you works - just ensure it is done before or at the time of drop-off.
Yes. Effective Care Society is a CRA-registered charity. We issue an official donation tax receipt within 1 week of vehicle intake, sent to your email address. The receipt reflects the fair market value of your vehicle.
We use standard automotive valuation references based on make, model, year, and condition at time of drop-off. For vehicles sold for parts, the receipt reflects the proceeds received.
It is sold for parts. Proceeds go toward repair costs for other vehicles. Your tax receipt is still issued - your donation still makes a placement possible.
No. All recipients are selected through our consistent need-based process to ensure fairness. You will be notified when your car is matched and will receive updates through the "See Your Car" dashboard if the family opts in.
A private dashboard we activate after your vehicle is placed. With the recipient family's consent, you receive anonymized updates - trips taken, milestones reached, and optional messages. Full names, addresses, and contact details are never shared.
Drop-off to placement typically takes two to four weeks. We issue your tax receipt within 1 week of drop-off regardless of when the vehicle is placed.
For Applicants
Questions applicants actually ask.
Yes. The application is free and takes about 10 minutes. There is no minimum income and we do not disqualify based on immigration status, credit history, or past legal issues. If you have genuine need and a valid BC driver's licence, apply.
Nothing to apply. Nothing to receive the vehicle. Effective Care covers inspection, certification, repairs, and the ICBC title transfer. After you receive it, you are responsible for your own insurance, registration, fuel, and maintenance - the same as any car owner. The car is free; running it is your responsibility.
Every application is reviewed against the same set of factors: household income, number of dependents, employment situation, distance to work or school, housing stability, and special circumstances. It is not first-come-first-served. The family with the most demonstrated need for a given vehicle is matched first.
Applications submitted by March 2027 will receive a response within the first review cycle (approximately 6 months from submission). We process applications in waves as vehicles become available and review staffing allows. If you applied and have not heard back within 6 months, feel free to follow up at info@effectivecare.ca.
You are welcome to reapply if your circumstances change. We keep all applications on file and may reach out if a vehicle becomes available that is a strong match for your situation.
No. Sharing updates through the "See Your Car" program is completely optional. Your identity is never revealed - if you do share, the donor receives only anonymized information. There is no pressure either way.
